Why researchers need to collab with business people! How late-risers actually work basically as much as early birds?! A system for how you can figure out when it's time to leave your job.
Hello! This newsletter is turning into an every-two-weeks kind of thing, so apologies about that. Hopefully this finds your inbox at a good time. I found some super interesting stuff through my internet scrolling these last two weeks that has given me a lot to think about, so dig in! Hope you find this stuff as conversation-startable (lol) as I did. As always, please drop a comment or hit reply and send me your thoughts.
š° In this post-girlboss world, how do consumers actually want to interact with and experience the founder/leader of a company? Do they want the leader to be MIA? The face of the brand? Showing their GRWM (get ready with meās) to be "just-like-us?ā Or conversely, showing their bougie lavish lifestyle as aspirational? I found these quotes from founders to be really good food for thought. In general, I am VERY. WARY. when a brand makes their founder/leader the face of the company (a la Goop, et al) because it cheapens it imo, and makes it less about the product itself. But Iām curious what you all thinkā and if you follow any companies with leaders as the face who you think execute it well?
š° This was a surprisingly interesting article about āthe valley of deathā in research (medical, scientific etc) which is basically where research and businesses are not connecting and collaborating, and so a ton of research dies before itās produced, and a ton of products are produced without concrete research. The conclusion is basically that governments, businesses, research, and technology need to work together to bridge the gap, so we can actually bring all the good research we have to market, and the products that actually get produced can be based in legitimacy and proof (cough cough Theranos).
š§ This podcast episode, featuring one of my TikTok mutuals (!) Nickey Skarstad. While this podcast is tech/product centric, I think there are a ton of good insights from Nickeyās experience that are relevant to all. I particularly want to call out this one thing that has stuck with me: when Nickey was at a job she didnāt love, she started to color-code her work calendar after every meeting: if she didnāt like that call, or found it boring/stressful/anxiety-inducing, she colored it red. If it gave her energy, was interesting for her, left her with good vibes, it was green. Yellow was somewhere in the middle. Then, she went back through the last few months and saw that the calendar was full of reds and yellows; from that, she knew it was time to go. I really love this approach of listening to your body and your instinct, and making professional decisions based off of that (if you can afford it). Really inspiring to me!
How do you know when itās time to leave a job? Do you have a system?š©āš» Cannot stop thinking about this TikTok:
that basically says doing life stuff on your work clock is actually making you a better capitalist (as per the definition of capitalism) because you are doing the least amount of work for the most profit AYOOOO.
š° One of my fave topics: digital communications, specifically the generational divides of emojis. Do you think š is cringey? Apparently many gen-zers do. What about š? Passive-aggressive, or simply affirmative? Thereās a generational divide with that one too. I know some people say, itās just emojis, who cares, yet according to this article, āroughly half of workers overthink the communications they send, and 62% say worrying about miscommunication at work affects their overall mental healthā I AM ONE OF THEM.
š° According to a survey, 42.7% of workers nap or sleep during a break on a typical work day. I learned this and sooo much more from this really compelling study around your sleep and your job. They talk about a ton of cool stuff including: the difference in work output between early-risers, and people who start work later (read: there isnāt a huge difference, see below graphic), and also managersā perceptions of early vs. late risers, among other things.

This weekās featured rec: The Friend Forward podcast, particularly the episode āāIām not like other girlsā: 4 Reasons Why Some Women Prefer to be Friends With Menā. This was an absolutely fascinating ep for me, because..to be honest.. I am immediately skeptical when women say āI feel more comfortable with guys than other women.ā This episode broke down why women might say, and feel that, and why we should take it seriously and explore it. It really challenged my own biases and assumptions. Would highly recommend this episode, regardless of where you fall on the gender friendship spectrum. Give it a listen and let me know what you think in the comments.
